What is the Meaning of Cylindrical Power?
Cylindrical power which is also known as astigmatism, arises when the cornea (which is the transparent outer layer of the eye) has an irregular shape that is similar to a rugby ball rather than its normal spherical shape.
This irregularity in the cornea’s curve will lead to having a blurred vision, mainly in certain directions due to the uneven focusing of the light entering the eye.To correct this issue, people with astigmatism need glasses or contact lenses with a specific cylindrical correction to have their normal vision.
When a person is having cylindrical power it doesn’t mean that the eyes are weak or damaged. Cylindrical power says that the person has to wear a designed lens to make up for the irregular curvature of the cornea.
When the person’s cylindrical power will go higher than 3.00, the doctors will perform a test called corneal topography. This is to check for keratoconus (a condition that affects the structure of cornea).
This test is done once a year to check the eye’s health. The doctor also looks for any early signs of serious conditions that could affect vision.

Is Having Cylindrical Power Harmful?
Just like every other refractive error or eye lens error, astigmatism is a common condition and is not very harmful.
Astigmatism will lead to having a blurry vision which may hamper the person’s day-to-day activities. It can be a risky condition if left untreated because having a blurry vision can lead to accidents while driving or walking on the road.
