We require special form of optical and non optical devices to get improvement in the vision.

Living with Low Vision

Many visually impaired people experience difficulty with regular activities such as cooking, shopping, managing finances, watching television, reading, and taking care of their personal needs. Many people with low vision have concerns about finding and keeping a job, dealing with friends and family members, getting around, and participating in recreational and social activities. But there are numerous low vision aids and scores of proven strategies for coping with low vision. These aids and strategies can help visually impaired people maximize their remaining vision and maintain their independence.

CAUSES OF LOW VISION

There are many causes of low vision. Some of these are:

  1. High Refractive Error
  2. Glaucoma
  3. Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the normal pressure in the eye rises. This pressure can cause damage to the optic nerve and other parts of the eye. People who have glaucoma lose their peripheral vision, and as the disease worsens, the field of vision narrows.

    Glaucoma

  4. cataract

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens. Because the lens focuses the eye, a person's vision blurs when the lens becomes cloudy, just as if one was trying to look at something through a waterfall. Glare can also be asignificant problem for people with cataracts.

  5. Retinal Problems :
  6. The following problems m also be the cause of low vision :
    • Diabetic Retinopathy
    • Diabetes can damage the capillaries of the retina, causing the retina to leak fluid onto the macula, and making the retina swell and blur vision. Without treatment, new blood vessels will grow along the retina and bleed, potentially destroying the retina. People with diabetic retinopathy have blurred and spotty vision
    • Macular Degeneration
    • The macula is the central part of the retina and is responsible for reading and other tasks that require the detection of fine detail. Macular Degeneration occurs when the macula becomes either thin (dry macular degeneration) or elevated and uneven due to leaking blood vessels under the retina (wet macular degeneration).People with macular degeneration have mostly peripheral vision and blurry or no central vision.
    • Other Macular Problems (Mycology etc)

  7. Eye Trauma
  8. Persistent Hypo-plastic Primary Vision (PHPV)

Computer Aids

There are many aids available for computer literate person with low vision. These devices can make it easier for computer users to use word processing programs, surf the Internet, and send email, but they can also help non-computer users handle many non-computer tasks. For instance, one can scan into the computer a magazine article that the computer then will read aloud. You can use a hand magnifier or special screen magnifier to make the computer screen look larger, or you can use a screen magnification program like Zoom Text, Lunar, or Magic. They enlarge the text and images on the monitor. Many software programs, including Windows and Microsoft Office, allow text and icons to be enlarged and to use high contrast color schemes.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Knowledge is the key to living with low vision People with low vision can enhance their quality of life by learning which optical and non-optical aids can help them, and by integrating strategies for dealing with the visual impairment into daily life. A person with low vision must practice using adaptive aids until they become second nature. Motivation and Attitude are perhaps the most important factors in determining one's success in using low vision aids. If people are willing to give some energy and effort to learning how to make the best use of their remaining sight, they can do nearly everything they did before, perhaps just in a different way.
